Botswana Safaris & Holidays

Botswana is a luxury African safari destination – in our opinion – perhaps the best. The country has been developed as a high end tourism destination by the Botswana Government – with the result that the quality of accommodation is extremely good, and there is a low volume, high cost model which means that it is not a mass tourist destination: wildlife viewing is privileged and you rarely see another vehicle whilst out on game drives. It is perhaps one of the last true wilderness destinations on the planet. This, of course, comes at a cost.

We have visited Botswana several times and experienced some of the most remote camps and their safari activities. We feel well qualified to recommend the best places to stay on Botswana safari or holiday.

In terms of wildlife viewing, the game is prolific, and the birdlife varied and colourful. The Okavango Delta is a maze of lagoons, channels and islands that make up a massive freshwater oasis in the Kalahari Desert , and is home to an array of wildlife including buffaloes, elephants, giraffe, antelope, hippos, crocodiles, zebras, wildebeest and birdlife. Activities in the Delta include game drives, bushwalks, boat trips and a wonderful experience in a mokoro – a dugout canoe – drifting through the reeves of the delta is a very special experience.

We also recommend the Linyanti or Chobe area where wildlife roams in profusion and diversity. This area is home to the largest concentration of Elephant in Africa and during the dry season the herds congregate along the fertile flood plains of the Chobe River. Large herds of Buffalo also concentrate on the floodplains during the dry season. Other major species such as Lion, Wild Dog, Puku, Red Lechwe, Sable and Roan Antelope are encountered.

During the low season (December – March), we have access to some great offers – with no single supplements charged at some of Botswana’s very best camps. Whilst this is known as rainy season, the rainfall is typically in the form of quick thunderstorms, which usually last about an hour. Expert rangers accompanying game drives, boat trips in the Delta or bushwalks ensure that sightings are maximised – this time of year is excellent for seeing a huge range of birdlife and wild flowers – and it’s the season for young, so there are lots of baby mammals around.

A trip here is easily combined with some time at the Victoria Falls and then either Mozambique or Mauritius for beach relaxation.
