The land of a thousand hills
Rwanda is a small mountainous country in central Africa. The beautiful landscapes are green and encompassed by stunning hills, gardens and tea plantations.
The Virunga mountains – which are home to one third of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population – rise steeply in the west and feature six volcanoes in addition to game reserves, beautiful culture and prolific bird life. The mountains slope down towards the Akagera River, the most remote source of the Nile.
Virunga volcanoes
Home to the world’s most famed and endangered mountain gorillas, the Virunga volcanoes rise steeply from Lake Kivu in the west of Rwanda. In addition to hosting one third of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, the area also features six volcanoes, game reserves, beautiful culture and prolific bird life – making it a valuable stop on your Rwandan itinerary.
Nyungwe National Park
Set in the south of Rwanda, this magnificent national park is the largest block of montane forest in all of Africa. Most visitors come for the primate population, which is made up of 13 species in all, including chimpanzees – but the forest itself also makes an adventurous and breathtaking sight.
Akagera National Park
Alluring for its contrast to anywhere else in the country, Rwanda’s Akagera National Park is an emerging savannah location, home to increasing game numbers that include zebra, hippo, crocodile and more. Off the radar for most tourists, it may seem like you have the park to yourself – which is wonderful for taking in the incredible open landscapes akin to those in Kenya or Tanzania.
